News, in fact, HAS being treated by the capitalist state as a public good. As a public good it has been steadily demolished.

News, railways, mail service, radio, etc--are all public goods even if some are owned by private companies.

Steven, you have probably heard some government entities discussing and proposing that Google and other giant online corporations be proclaimed public utility companies. The latter ARE public good and as such are regulated by respective authorities, that is, are subject to strict state control (either local or federal or both) because they provide essential services.
