Steve, it is good to see you admonish some of the ‘Patriotic Millionaires’ type narratives we hear so often from progressives that merely taxing wealth to help fund government is some kind of solution and some kind of explanation of the monetary system. This isn’t to say that taxation isn’t important. As Bilbo wrote on the Billy Blog a few months back, taxation lessens the power the wealthy have to excessively influence government. We don’t hear too many narratives such as that from the Patriotic Millionaires! There are also matters pertaining to fiscal space and such if one wants to get into the more ‘boring’ aspects of the situation.

The other thing of importance is to note that corporate welfare, such as that of the defense industry, does lead to employment all over the country. It does not benefit progressives to try to deny this. Many of these jobs are relatively good, stable jobs in engineering and manufacturing. The situation isn’t much different with the fossil fuel industry and many other industries. The only way to reform these industries is to ensure that the people working in those industries can keep their jobs and salaries without having to undergo significant retraining/relocation. In the case of the defense industry, the defense industry can be nationalized and things produced by them can shift more towards peaceful causes. With a good understanding of economics, it is possible to see how to achieve the politically-necessary goal of maintaining employment, not to mention achieving full employment, if we are ever to hope to see useful reform.

Truly eye-opening stuff as always. The fact that only 117 people control over $50 trillion of global wealth while 20k ppl. a day die of starvation and preventable disease is absolutely disgusting but the reality we live in. #EatTheRich #WealthConcentration #TitansOfCapital
